Japan’s only national museum devoted to Western art!
The National Museum of Western Art is the only national museum in Japan exclusively devoted to showcasing the wide gamut of Western art. Designed by the renowned French architect Le Corbusier, the main building is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. The museum is based on the Matsukata Collection, which was returned to Japan by France after WWII, and houses a collection of over 6,000 works, including pieces by Renoir, Picasso, Monet, and van Gogh, and other leading lights of Western art.
The permanent exhibition displays works by era, allowing visitors to systematically learn about trends in Western art. About three times a year, the museum hosts exhibitions focusing on specific artists or themes, featuring extensive collections loaned from other museums in places such as Europe and North America. -
Experience more—not only to see, but also to learn
The National Museum of Western Art also hosts educational programs and talk events. Not only does it hold art and gallery talks, but it also hosts architectural tours and events that combine art with music— fantastic ways to learn while passing the time enjoyably.
